Alaskan Klee Kai

The Alaskan Klee Kai is a spitz-type breed that combines the energy of agility and the dense coat and mask of a spitz.

It is social, but a bit reserved when meeting new people. A smart and playful small breed is perfect in agility and loyal companionship.

It has three different size varieties that can be suitable for both apartment living or active homes. They require moderate daily activity and steady, patient training.

Physical Characteristics

The Alaskan Klee Kai is a dog with fur that consists of a double coat of three colors which are: red and white, black and white, and gray and white.

Its medium wedge-shaped head has an erect triangular ears and a facial mask on it which makes the almond-shaped eyes more visible.

Out of the three sizes – toy, miniature, and standard – this small spitz-type is 13–17 inches tall and weighs 5–22 pounds.

Temperament / Personality

The Alaskan Klee Kai are known for their curiousness, agility, and aloofness and they are also very intelligent.

Their intellect is very high, but without proper engagement, it can result in stubbornness. They are loving towards family members, however, they may be a bit cautious

Health

Alaskan Klee Kais are generally healthy because of careful breeding. They have however been reported to be prone to juvenile cataracts, liver disease, factor VII deficiency, and cardiac issues.

Some lines are said to have hypothyroidism as well. Regular veterinary screenings and genetic testing can be a good way of detecting and managing these conditions at an early stage.

Grooming

The Klee Kai’s thick double coat has to be brushed once a week at least to remove the loose hair and prevent matting, which also helps to keep the coat healthy. During the shedding period, brush the coat daily.

The fur is naturally oily and so the dog does not get dirty easily, thus bathing can be done less often. Routine nail cuts, ear checks, and dental care promote the overall wellness of your pet.

Exercise

Through their spitz background, the Alaskan Klee Kai has normal to very high energy levels, thus they need at least 30–45 minutes of exercise daily.

They are very good in agility and at the same time, they like fast walks, playing, and mental challenges.

When the dog is off-leash activity, it should be done in places protected with fence, because the dog can run away, as it is very curious.

Training

Bright and always ready to serve, Klee Kai are very receptive if positive reinforcement is used.

To get rid of being stubborn and the fear of strangers, it is advisable to go to early obedience and socialization classes.

Steady and calm training not only helps to develop their agility skills but also makes the relationship between humans and dogs stronger.

Nutrition

Find a high-quality diet, which is suitable for a small-breed, active spitz, in accordance with AKC nutrition expert guidelines.

Change portions according to the size of the variety and the level of activity, watching the body condition in order not to have gaining of weight.

Alaskan Klee Kais are very good friends for the families with high activity and the older children who have a good understanding of the dog’s mind.
